Granny Squares – also lovingly called ‘grannies’ by crochet fans – have a long history. They were mentioned in an American magazine as early as 1891. The first printed pattern for a granny square appeared in 1897. The colourful designs had their big moment in the late 1960s. They made their way into the colourful fashion world of the hippies and brought colour into homes. Since then, their fascination has remained unbroken, which is certainly due to the fact that grannies offer endless creative possibilities.
Granny Squares are symmetrical motifs crocheted from the center outward in rounds. They are generally considered to be in quadratic (“squared”) form. But there are other Granny shapes too: from Granny Triangles (3-corner motifs), Granny Circles (round form), Granny Octagones (8-corner motifs), Granny Hexagons (6-corner motifs) to especially fancy crochet shapes like flowers or snowflakes. As you can change a Granny shape into another one (for example, turning a Granny Circle into a Granny Square), you can further expand this Granny collection with unlimited new variations of your own! This dictionary is by no means complete but it can serve as a comprehensive collection of Granny Square motifs for your next Granny Square or Irish Crochet project.
This Granny Square dictionary is grouped by shape (quadratic, round, hexagonal, triangular), covering the most beautiful Granny Squares found on the internet and in crochet books and recreating them in new colours and a proof-read crochet pattern. Each Granny Square motif is shown in its crocheted form and as its crochet chart (crochet diagram).

How to read the instructions
- The Granny Squares are grouped by shape and sorted alphabetically. Beware: some Grannies might be known under a different name as mentioned here.
- The illustrations are structured as follows: the top motif shows the pattern in an example colour pattern (not necessarily each round in a new colour); the bottom picture illustrates the motif’s crochet chart (crochet diagram). Each crochet diagram comes with a step-by-step instruction.
- The crochet pattern is written in US Crochet Terminology.
- To facilitate the reading, there is intentionally no space between the stitch to be worked and the number of times it must be worked in the same stitch. For example: “3dc in next st, ch4, 2dc in next 3 dc” means that 3 double crochets are worked in the next stitch, followed by 4 chain stitches, then 2 dc in each of the next 3 stitches (creating 13 sts).
- Asterisks (*): a sequence of stitches between two same asterisks means that this sequence must be repeated a specified number of times to reach the end of the row. For example: “*ch2, work 1 sc into next sp, ch3, 1 dc into next dc, ch 3, work 1 sc into next sp, ch2*. Rep * to end, turn”.
- Square brackets []: used to simplify repetition. Instructions inside the []- brackets are to be worked the number of times (x) stated. Example: “[ch2, skip next st, 1 sc into next st] x 5”.
- Round brackets (): either enclose additional information, for example “ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2)”. Or they group together a sequence of stitches that must be worked into the same location, for example “ch1, (2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next st”.
Tips for your Granny Project
- For the best granny square result, moisten your granny after completion, stretch it on a locking board and let it dry thoroughly while it’s being stretched to its form.
- Changing colour: the colour shifts in the example colour patterns are not explicitly mentioned in the pattern instructions. If you want to work the new round in another colour, work as follows: end the last st of the old colour already in the new colour, to create an invisible transition. Beware: if the new Rd starts with a ch st, change the colour with the 1st ch of the new Rd and not in the last st of the previous Rd!
- To avoid lose yarn ends when changing colours: work the new colour around the old colour to hide the old colour yarn end in your work
- Connecting granny squares together: there are several ways to connect granny squares with each other to form a bigger granny project. One way to connect them beautifully together is by slip stitching in the opposing inner loops of the granny squares.
- Certain granny projects like crochet earrings, snowflakes or crochet bowls look best if the crochet is stiffened. Stiffening your crochet is also known as “blocking” the crochet. This is how to do it:
- (1) put glue (crafting glue or wood glue) or starch into a small container of water,
- (2) put your granny square into the bowl to thoroughly wet it with the glue mixture or use a paint brush to wet the crochet with the mixture,
- (3) attach the granny square onto a locking board or Styrofoam (to prevent it from sticking) and let it dry. For a quick dry, you can iron it (put a protecting cloth over it and use a mild iron setting),
- (4) repeat steps 2-3 for the other granny squares that are part of your crochet project,
- (5) sew the stiffened granny squares with a sharp wool or embroidery needle to your desired form together.
Stitch Types Used
Bobble Stitch (5dc-bobble st)
Work 5 dc in one st leaving last loop of each st on hook and then crochet them together with a common end loop ( it’s basically working 5 dc together that are in the same place).
- you can work any stitch as a bobble stitch, for example a 5 tc-bobble stitch consists of working 5 half-tc in same place that are connected (completed) by a common end loop.
Cluster Stitch
A combination of stitches worked in several stitches that are joined together by a common last loop, e.g. a dc5tog (“double crochet 5 sts together”) is a cluster, dtc3tog (“double treble crochet 3 sts tog.”) is a cluster, … When a cluster is worked in one stitch, it forms a bobble.
Popcorn Stitch (5dc-popcorn)
Work 5 dc into same place. Remove hook from working loop and insert it into the 1st dc made from front to back, pick up working loop and draw through to close popcorn.
Puff Stitch (of 4 hdc)
Similar to a bobble stitch but worked using half double crochets. One loop per stitch remains on the hook until the required number of loops have been worked, then the loops are connected by a common end loop to finish the hdc.
For example, [YO, insert hook into place, YO and draw loop through] x 4, YO and draw through all loops on hook (it’s, basically, working 4 half-hdc that are crocheted together with a common end loop).
Picot Stitch
A chain loop formed into a closing ring by a slip stitch or single crochet. For example, ch3, sl st down through same base st as ch-3 (=ch3-picot).
Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC)
Insert hook around post of stitch from the front, around the back and to the front again and complete the dc as usual.
Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC)
Insert hook around post of stitch from the back, around the front and to the back again and complete the dc as usual.
Solomon’s Knot Single Crochet Stitch
Make a long ch1, insert hook underneath strand in the back of the work, YO and draw through the first loop on the hook, YO and pull through both of the remaining loops to complete the single crochet.
It’s basically working a single crochet through the inside loop of the long ch-1
Working into chain spaces
Indicates a free location typically created by several consecutive chain stitches. For example, “1dc, ch5, 1 dc” creates a space (of ch-5) between the dc-sts through which you could stitch hiding the ch-5 (wrapping ch-5 with the new sts).

Granny Circles (round and 8-point motifs)
Granny Circles are usually part of a Granny Square in which the last two to three rounds are used to create a squared frame by leveling up or down the stitches. To level up: use double crochet dc, treble crochet tc, double treble crochet dtc. To level down use single crochet sc, half double crochet hdc, chain stitches. At the corners use longer stitches (dc, tc) in a V-st combination, for example (3dc, ch3, 3dc) or (3tc, ch3, 3tc).
General rule of thumb: the longer the “waves” of the Granny Circle, the longer the stitches have to be to level up.
Tip: if the Granny Circle consists of flower petals you can easily create a frame by the following steps:
- (last-but-two-Rd:) work a long number of chain stitches behind each petal (the larger the petal, the longer the ch has to be) and connect the ch sts with a long crochet stitch between each petal (for large petals use dc or tc; for small petals use sc or hdc).
- (Next-to-last-Rd:) work 1sc in each st and (1-2 dc, 1-2 hdc, multiple sc, 1-2 hdc, 1-2 dc) in each ch sp around, and a V-st combination for the corners.
